Statement on Hurricane Helene

On behalf of our team, thank you to everyone who has reached out to us in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Our office and studio are located in central and eastern North Carolina, away from the disaster area, and sustained no damage from the storm. Music Maker’s 30th anniversary celebration in Durham and Fountain will continue as planned next week.

Our neighbors in western NC have experienced a devastating blow to their communities. We have been in touch with several of our partner artists who live in the region. While communication remains difficult, we’re grateful that everyone we’ve been able to reach is safe and well.

Music Maker is in initial talks with partners including the Jazz Foundation of America, Preservation Hall Foundation, and the North Carolina Arts Council to pull together resources for artists who will be impacted by this disaster. We will share more information in the coming weeks.

We are especially heartbroken by the devastation in Swannanoa, NC. Tim studied at Warren Wilson College, where he fell in love with the local old-time music scene and sparked his passion for folklore. By chance, October’s Listeners Circle celebrates this region’s music with the release of the Carolina Cutups’ debut album. Led by fellow Warren Wilson alumnus Tim Wells, the Cutups’ rowdy and joyful “punk bluegrass” reminds us of the vitality, strength, and perseverance of Appalachia’s musical traditions – and of its people. Join our Listeners Circle to hear it now.

Finally, if you will be traveling by car to our 30th anniversary celebration next week, please note that many roads will be closed in western NC and plan your route accordingly. We recommend booking your hotel room in Durham immediately if you have not already done so.

Please continue to keep in your thoughts our artists, friends, and family throughout the Southeast who have been affected by this storm. Thank you for being part of our community.

Much love,

Tim and Denise Duffy
